On the morning of April 10th, two pet dogs and one pet cat boarded the G119 high‑speed train from Beijingnan Railway Station to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, marking the official launch of the pet consignment service on China's high-speed trains. This service has been piloted on some Beijing-Shanghai high-speed trains since April 8th, and 36 reservation orders have been received through the 12306 platform.

"I often travel on business with my dog. Previously, I either drove or consigned it in the airplane's cargo hold, which was time‑consuming and expensive," said Ms. Cui, who was traveling with her six‑year‑old dog to Jinan. "Now that pets can be consigned on high-speed trains, I booked immediately. The whole process went smoothly. The ticket plus the consignment fee was just over 500 yuan, which is much easier than driving."

Another passenger, Mr. Tang, experienced the service for the first time. "In the past, I could only board my cat at a pet hotel during business trips. This time, I prepared cat litter and toys, and with the staff's help, my cat quickly adapted to the container and lay quietly inside. I felt very reassured."

The high-speed train pet consignment requires the use of a railway-specific pet box measuring 60 cm long, 45 cm wide, and 46 cm high. The fully enclosed container features an air‑recirculation system, external displays for oxygen level, temperature, and humidity, and is equipped with noise‑reduction and odor‑control functions. Inside, cameras allow staff to monitor pets in real time; if any parameter goes out of the normal range, the display turns red and the system will automatically alarm to ensure safety.

"The specialized pet container is fully equipped and supervised by trained professionals, so I feel completely relieved to entrust my pet to them," said passenger Ms. An. The railway department also provides matching trays for different pets, such as cat litter trays for cats and pee-pee pads for dogs, all of which are provided for free.

Currently, the service is being piloted on 10 trains among five railway stations, including Beijingnan, Jinanxi, Nanjingnan, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Hangzhoudong. Passengers can book via the 12306 platform at least two days in advance. Each passenger may consign one healthy cat or dog with a weight not exceeding 15 kg and a shoulder height not exceeding 40 cm.
